Chhatrika is a carved wooden jharokha for wall decor, made in the style of the overhanging balcony windows of Rajasthani forts and havelis. A jharokha is a small projecting window with a domed roof, pillars and a balcony ledge, and this piece brings that shape to your wall in miniature. Its name comes from chhatri, the curved domed canopy that crowns it. Under the dome, a cusped arch rests on two turned pillars, a criss-cross lattice rail runs across the base of the opening, and five turned drops hang below the ledge. The centre is left open, with no mirror or backing, so the wall colour behind becomes part of the design. It comes in four distressed painted finishes, green, yellow, orange and blue, with the wood showing through at the edges for a hand-worn, vintage look.
Key Features:-
- Domed Chhatri Top with Carved Crest: The top curves like the roof of a jharokha balcony, carved with a leaf pattern and finished with a raised crest at the centre and scrolls at both ends. It gives the frame its palace-window outline and makes it easy to recognise as Rajasthani design.
- Cusped Arch on Turned Pillars: Inside the frame, a scalloped arch sits on two turned pillars with carved square capitals. The pillars stand slightly forward from the side panels, which adds depth and shadow to the piece.
- Lattice Rail and Hanging Drops: A criss-cross jali rail runs along the bottom of the opening, like a balcony railing. Below the ledge, five turned wooden drops finish the base, just as they do on traditional jharokha windows.
- Open Centre Without a Mirror: The opening is left empty, so the jharokha frames whatever is behind it. Hang it on a painted or textured wall, or around a small artwork, to create a window-like focal point.
- Four Distressed Colours: Choose from green, yellow, orange or blue. Each finish is worn back along the carving so the wood tone shows through, which highlights the detail. You can hang one as a single accent or group several colours together for a bright, festive jharokha wall.
